In simple terms the EPM functions you need to use in your solutioning depends on the data generated by your business system.

For Example:

If you are doing any account based reporting. Say from A/c-1 to A/c-10. Where every a/c has a relation ship with Profit center. PC-1 to PC-10.

Your solution you may us following function @ BPC & MS Excel.

BPC

1. EPMMemberDesc
2. EPMDimensionType
3. EPMRetrieveDat
4. EPMMemberProperty

MS Excel

1. If function
2. If loop function
3. Range function

Note: BPC 10 Functions are simple functions. Easy to learn and use in the reporting(BPC). Manly used to categorized the data (Values/Key figures) based on their property/ description.
